CIWF's Food Business Team celebrates companies making major animal welfare improvements through our Good Farm Animal Welfare Award (GFAWA) program. Established in 2007 with only the Good Egg Award, the program now spans twelve categories and ranges from sustainable sourcing practices to ending cage and crate use. Over 1.4 billion animals are set to benefit annually from the policies and commitments of the companies CIWF has awarded since the program’s inception.

CIWF's Good Chicken Award (GCA) celebrates companies that have improved welfare requirements or commit to improving (within five years) broiler chicken welfare by sourcing chicken from higher welfare breeds, a lower stocking density, more humane slaughter practices, and better environmental standards in line with the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC) in the U.S. and Canada. To apply for the GCA in North America, companies must:

  1. Publicly sign up to the BCC
  2. Demonstrate progress in the implementation of the BCC
    1. Have achieved full compliance with the litter, lighting, and enrichment components of the BCC
    2. Demonstrate meaningful progress on at least one of the other threat criteria of the BCC (stocking density, breed, CAS)
  3. Publish publicly available timelines for full implementation of BCC-compliant products
  4. Annually report BCC progress through publicly available reporting methods

In 2024, CIWF USA was thrilled to award the GCA to five U.S. companies for their pioneering roles in improving broiler welfare in the United States:

By recognizing industry leaders through the Good Chicken Award, CIWF encourages more companies to take meaningful steps toward improving broiler chicken welfare. Each awarded company set ambitious commitments, which drives a powerful precedent for the future of broiler chicken farming and procurement in the United States. With each award, CIWF celebrates BCC progress, further progressing the broiler industry towards a humane future.
Since our inception, we set out to constantly strengthen our commitment to the very best care and compassion for our birds that are grown as promised. The honor of being recognized by Compassion in World Farming for our animal welfare standards motivates us [to] always keep evolving to ensure consistently superior welfare outcomes.
