CIWF’s Food Business Team works collaboratively with companies to improve the lives of millions of animals on a global scale. One of the many CIWF works to feature businesses making the most impact is to award them for their merit through the Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards (GFAWA). Established in 2007 with the Good Egg Award (GEA), GFAWA spans 12 categories and ranges from sustainable sourcing practices to ending cage and crate use across a company’s entire supply chain.

The GEA recognizes companies that supply or have committed (within five years) to supply only cage-free eggs or egg products. To date, 112 million laying hens are set to benefit from the commitments made to improve egg farming practices globally. To apply for the GEA in the United States or Canada, a company must have:

  • An overarching regional commitment to adopt a cage-free sourcing policy within 5 years, which must apply to all shell eggs, egg products, and egg ingredients.

    • For retailers: this policy must apply to all eggs sold in-store (own-label and branded). Cage-free egg products and ingredients must at least apply to own-label products.

  • Prohibit the use of combination and limited access systems in their supply chain.

  • A publicly available policy and annual progress report.

CIWF USA was proud to recognize Kipster U.S. as the United States’ sole recipient of the 2024 Good Egg Award in Paris, France. Having previously won the 2018 GEA and Best Marketing Award in the Netherlands, Kipster continues to showcase its efforts in transitioning the egg market towards a more humane, sustainable, and compassionate future.

Chickens, by nature, are forest dwellers. Our hens enjoy spacious indoor and outdoor gardens, which include enrichments like comfortable nests, perches, dust baths, and pecking blocks to ensure they experience natural comforts. Together with consumers, NGO’s like CIWF, farmers, and everyone we really can change the food system and do better for people, the environment, and the animal.
