Compassion in World Farming's U.S. Executive Director Ben Williamson responds to the most recent developments on bird flu in the U.S.
"Until a few months ago, cases of bird flu among people were attributable to close contact with infected poultry or environments contaminated with the virus. Now, for the first time, there is talk of human transmission from mammals. The more infections of this nature are repeated, the greater the risk that the virus will evolve and acquire the ability to spread by direct transmission between people.
We need to intervene without delay, radically reforming the poultry sector, and not only that. We must put an end to factory farming, or it will continue to provide fertile ground and a constant supply of hosts for new and increasingly dangerous viruses."
